Our Curriculum

Helping every pupil achieve their personal best

We believe every child has a personal best and deserves the opportunity, encouragement and support needed to reach it.

Our pupil-centred curriculum is based on the National Curriculum but provides the flexibility required to respond to different abilities, interests and learning needs. Teaching is differentiated appropriately so that pupils can access lessons, experience success and make meaningful progress from their individual starting points.

We maintain high aspirations for every pupil while recognising that progress may look different for each child. Through relevant and rewarding learning experiences, we aim to help children rediscover curiosity, become more confident learners and develop a positive relationship with education.

A Personalised Approach to Learning

Meeting pupils where they are

There is no single approach that works for every child. Pupils joining Maple School may have experienced disrupted education, gaps in their learning or difficulties accessing a traditional classroom environment.

We take time to understand each pupil’s strengths, needs and previous experiences. This allows staff to plan learning that is appropriately challenging without becoming overwhelming.

Clear routines, supportive relationships and carefully structured lessons help pupils feel more secure and ready to learn. As their confidence develops, children are encouraged to take greater responsibility, explore new ideas and become increasingly independent.

Our approach allows flexibility and creativity within teaching while maintaining clear expectations for progress and achievement.

Learning Beyond Academic Subjects

Developing the whole child

Academic learning forms an important part of life at Maple School, but our curriculum also supports pupils’ wider personal, social and emotional development.

Throughout the school day, children are helped to:

  • develop confidence, resilience and self-esteem
  • communicate their thoughts, feelings and needs
  • build positive and respectful relationships
  • understand equality, diversity and British Values
  • make healthy and informed lifestyle choices
  • become increasingly responsible and independent
  • participate positively within school and the wider community

These areas of development are embedded within lessons, school routines and everyday interactions, helping pupils connect what they learn with their experiences outside the classroom.

Healthy Lifestyles and Life Choices

Building positive habits for life

We help pupils understand how the choices they make can affect their physical health, emotional wellbeing and relationships with others.

Opportunities to explore healthy living begin from the moment pupils arrive at school. Children can enjoy a healthy breakfast and spend time socialising with peers and trusted adults in a safe and supportive environment.

Throughout the curriculum, pupils explore positive and negative lifestyle choices and begin to understand the possible consequences of their decisions. School lunches also provide opportunities to try different foods and learn about meals, traditions and celebrations from a range of cultures.

Relationships and Sex Education

Supporting safe and healthy relationships

All pupils receive Relationships and Sex Education that is appropriate to their age, ability and level of understanding.

This learning helps children recognise the qualities of healthy and meaningful relationships, understand appropriate boundaries and develop the knowledge they need to keep themselves safe.

Teaching is approached sensitively and adapted to meet pupils’ individual needs. Further information about the content covered and parental rights is available within the school’s Relationships and Sex Education Policy.

Religious Studies

Encouraging understanding and respect

Religious Studies helps pupils develop accurate knowledge of the beliefs, traditions and core values associated with the world’s main religions.

Through age-appropriate learning, children are encouraged to explore different cultures and perspectives, challenge misconceptions and show respect for people whose beliefs or experiences may differ from their own.

Our approach promotes tolerance, equality and diversity while supporting the fundamental British Values that run throughout school life. Teaching draws upon relevant elements of the locally agreed syllabus produced by the Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education.

Celebrating Progress

Recognising every step forward

Progress is not measured solely through academic outcomes. We also recognise improvements in engagement, communication, confidence, independence, relationships and attitudes towards learning.

For some pupils, success may mean completing a challenging activity. For others, it may involve joining a group, managing a difficult emotion, asking for help or persevering with something new.

By noticing and celebrating these meaningful achievements, we help pupils recognise how far they have come and develop the confidence to continue growing.
